Spotlyts Snippets: Eco-conscious Fashion

June 2024’s Fashion on Spotlyts may have already gone past so fast, but the industry remains. In this sixth edition of Spotlyts Snippets, we once again turn our spotlight on the vibrant world of eco-conscious fashion and its transformative impact on the industry. As sustainability becomes a crucial focus, designers and brands are pioneering innovative approaches to fashion that respect both the environment and ethical practices. Let’s quickly look at the insights of two (2) leaders involved with the industry.

Concrete Orchids: Eco-Friendly Streetwear

“I run a streetwear brand inspired by nature called Concrete Orchids. We pay close attention to our impact on the planet. We’ve used compostable packaging, such as poly mailers or clothing bags.

Only working with certified manufacturers has also been very important to us. I recently visited our manufacturers in China to verify their ethical and sustainable business practices.

Our customers care deeply about their effect on the planet, and so as a company, we need to pay close attention to everything in our control in order to invest in our planet for the future.

We’re currently sampling products using sustainable fabrics/materials, such as used clothing, organic materials, or natural dyes.”

Collaborating with Artisans for Ethical Fashion

“As a fashion industry professional, I’ve developed fashion lines that resonate with environmentally conscious consumers.

The project used ethically-sourced natural materials in collaboration with local handicraft artisans. Through this, we were able to create a unique style that went beyond simple clothing and reflected local culture and traditions. Consumers showed great sympathy for these efforts, which greatly contributed to enhancing brand value.”

I hope to see the day when eco-conscious brands focus also on size inclusivity. I try to be an active environmentalist, but it’s hard for people who are not straight-sized. I still think this is a huge step in the right direction.

    1. Hi Andrea,

You make such an important point! Size inclusivity is definitely a crucial aspect that needs more attention in the eco-conscious fashion movement. It’s true that everyone should have the opportunity to participate in sustainable fashion, regardless of size. I completely agree that while we’re seeing great strides in sustainability, expanding this focus to include more diverse sizing would be a huge and necessary step forward. Thanks for highlighting this—hopefully, more brands will take this into consideration as they continue to evolve!
