“I never wanted to be defined by my diagnosis—I wanted to be defined by my determination.”

Luminescence Goh, a Singapore-based multi-award-winning author, integrates themes of resilience and personal growth in his books. The following interview shares insights into the experiences and motivations behind Goh’s life and works.
Thank you for joining us today! To begin, could you please introduce yourself—in your own words—and share your background, what you currently do, and what you’re passionate about?
Hi, I’m Luminescence Goh. I’m a storyteller at heart, driven by a deep passion for literature, creativity, and transformation. My journey as an author stems from a diverse background that spans military service, the furniture industry, and IT. These experiences have shaped how I see the world and craft stories that resonate with emotional depth and thematic purpose. Today, I write across genres, blending fantasy, philosophy, and personal growth. My works include Chronicles of the Enchanted Vanguard series, an epic fantasy exploring resilience and environmental themes, and Navigating Life’s Challenges: Mindful Resilience for Zodiacs, a reflective guide inspired by Chinese astrology and modern mindfulness. I’m passionate about helping readers connect more deeply with themselves and the world through stories that inspire courage, empathy, and sustainable living. Beyond writing, I enjoy integrating my technical skills—like web development and digital storytelling—to reach broader audiences and innovate how narratives are experienced. Whether through books, blogs, or events, my mission is to illuminate the literary journey with elegance and purposeful creativity.
What led you to the path you’re on now, and how has your motivation or focus shifted over time?
What led me to the path I’m on now was a deep desire to make sense of both the beauty and pain of life. I’ve experienced my share of challenges—moments of grief, uncertainty, and reinvention. My time in the military taught me resilience and discipline, the furniture industry exposed me to craftsmanship and human connection, and my work in IT opened up a world of systems thinking and digital possibilities. But it was writing that gave me a voice—a way to translate those life lessons into something meaningful. At first, my motivation for writing was personal—almost therapeutic. I wrote to heal, to understand, and to hold on to hope. Over time, that motivation expanded. Now, I write not just for myself, but for others who may be facing their own storms. I want to tell stories that offer perspective, that speak to inner strength, and that inspire conscious living—whether through fantasy, mindfulness, or philosophical reflection. Today, my focus is on integration—blending creativity with clarity, the mystical with the practical. I want to keep evolving as a storyteller, using words to connect, to empower, and to make the intangible feel possible.
Can you describe a pivotal moment or experience that shaped the way you approach your work or life?
One pivotal moment that changed everything for me was the period when I was struggling with depression after a significant personal loss. At the time, everything felt muted—like I was drifting through life without clarity or purpose. I remember sitting alone with my notebook one night, and instead of journaling my feelings as I usually did, I began writing a scene about a young hero facing a crumbling world. That character, Seraphina and Anastrina, eventually became the heart of my novel, Chronicles of the Enchanted Vanguard. That experience showed me the quiet power of storytelling. It became more than just an outlet—it was a lifeline. I realised that through fiction, I could express truths I didn’t yet have words for in my real life. It taught me that vulnerability and imagination could coexist—and that healing can be found in creation. Since then, I’ve approached both life and work with deeper intentionality. I’ve learned to honour struggle as a source of strength and creativity, and I now write with the hope that my stories might offer others the same kind of light I once needed to find my way forward.
What does a typical day look like for you, and how do you structure your time around your priorities?
A typical day for me is a balance between creativity, focus, and intentional rest. I usually start my morning early with some quiet time—either journaling, reading something inspiring, or simply sitting in mindfulness. It helps me centre myself before diving into the day. My mornings are my most productive hours, so I dedicate that time to writing or editing—whether it’s working on a novel, an article, or content for upcoming projects. I treat my creative work like a sacred appointment, blocking out distractions as much as possible. Afternoons are usually reserved for the technical or strategic side of things—website updates, social media planning, correspondence, or researching new ideas. Because of my background in IT and digital work, I find it energising to toggle between creative thinking and structured tasks. Evenings are for slowing down: reading, brainstorming loosely, or connecting with other creatives. I try to protect some time just for myself, without strict goals, to let new ideas surface naturally. Overall, I structure my day around my core priorities: creativity first, strategy second, and restoration always. I’ve learned that honouring both discipline and flexibility helps me stay grounded while continuing to grow.

Are there any personal values, lessons, or principles that consistently guide your decisions?
Yes—there are a few core values that consistently guide how I live and create. One is authenticity. I believe in showing up as I am, both in life and on the page. Whether I’m writing a fantasy novel or a mindfulness guide, I always try to stay true to the emotional and human truths behind the words. Another is resilience. Life has taught me that setbacks aren’t the end—they’re often redirections. I try to face challenges with the mindset that every difficulty carries a lesson, and that perseverance, even in quiet forms, is a powerful strength. Compassion is equally central. In a world that can feel disconnected or rushed, I strive to make my work—and my presence—a reminder that empathy matters. I want my stories to not only entertain but also encourage reflection and healing. Lastly, I hold close the principle of intentionality. I don’t just write to produce content—I write to spark something meaningful. Whether it’s to inspire someone to care more deeply for the environment or to believe in their capacity to grow, I want every word to serve a purpose. These values keep me grounded, especially when decisions get tough or paths are uncertain. They remind me why I do what I do.
What’s a common misconception people might have about your work or your journey?
One common misconception people have about my work is that writing comes effortlessly or that inspiration is always flowing. In reality, storytelling—especially when weaving complex fantasy worlds or deeply personal themes—requires immense discipline, research, and patience. It’s not just about creativity; it’s about structure, strategy, and perseverance. Another misconception is that my background in IT, military service, and the furniture industry has little connection to my writing. But in truth, every experience has shaped how I see the world and tell stories. My time in IT has influenced the way I structure narratives with precision, my military service instilled resilience that helps me push through creative blocks, and my exposure to design and craftsmanship has sharpened my ability to create immersive, detailed worlds. Some also assume that because I write about resilience and mindfulness, I’ve “figured it all out”—but the truth is, I write about these themes because I’m constantly learning and applying them in my own life. Writing, for me, isn’t just about sharing knowledge; it’s about exploration, growth, and connection.

What recent achievement or milestone are you most proud of, and what made it meaningful for you?
One of the recent milestones I’m most proud of is being named a Finalist in the 2024 Literary Global Book Awards. This recognition was not just an accolade but a profound affirmation of my journey as a writer. It signified that the themes I explore—resilience, mindfulness, and the intricate dance between fantasy and reality—resonated deeply with readers and critics alike. Additionally, my book Navigating Life’s Challenges: Mindful Resilience for Zodiacs was honoured as “Book of the Week” by Books for Humanity Global in December 2024. This acknowledgement highlighted the impact of blending ancient wisdom with contemporary mindfulness practices, offering readers practical tools to navigate life’s complexities. These achievements are meaningful to me because they validate the fusion of my diverse experiences—from military service and IT to personal trials—into narratives that inspire and empower. They reinforce my commitment to crafting stories that not only entertain but also serve as beacons of hope and transformation.
Could you share a challenge you’ve overcome and what that experience taught you?
One of the most significant challenges I’ve faced was navigating through depression during a period of personal loss and transition. At the time, I felt like I had lost direction—not just in my career, but in life. Everything I had built or believed in felt unstable, and I was carrying more than I knew how to express. What helped me slowly climb out of that space wasn’t a single event—it was the quiet act of writing. I began capturing thoughts, fragments of stories, and characters who were also struggling to find light in the dark. Through those words, I realised I was also rewriting parts of myself. That’s how Chronicles of the Enchanted Vanguard began—born not out of ease, but necessity. That experience taught me the healing power of creativity, and more importantly, that vulnerability isn’t weakness—it’s the doorway to strength. It reminded me to honour my emotional rhythms, to build resilience not by resisting pain but by facing it with compassion and clarity. Now, every time I write, I carry that lesson with me: that even in brokenness, something meaningful can be born.
How do you maintain clarity or momentum when facing multiple demands or pressure?
When I’m facing multiple demands or pressure—which happens often as a writer, creative, and someone wearing many hats—I ground myself in clarity through intentional routines. I start by reconnecting with why I’m doing what I do. That deeper purpose acts like a compass when everything feels chaotic. I also prioritise what truly matters. I’ve learned that not everything urgent is important. I break my workload into focused blocks, giving each task dedicated attention instead of trying to do everything at once. I use tools like digital planners and mindful pauses—moments of breath, reflection, or journaling—to reset and avoid burnout. Momentum, for me, isn’t about speed; it’s about sustainability. I’ve come to embrace the idea that progress can be steady, even quiet. When I take care of my mental space, I write with more heart and lead with more presence. Ultimately, it’s not about avoiding pressure—it’s about developing a rhythm that honours both productivity and well-being. That balance is what keeps me moving forward.
If there’s one thing you’d want people to remember you by, what would it be—and why?
If there’s one thing I’d want people to remember me by, it’s this: I used stories to illuminate the human spirit. Whether through fantasy adventures or mindful reflections, I hope my words help people feel seen, empowered, and less alone in their journey. I want readers to remember that no matter how uncertain or overwhelming life may feel, there is always a path forward—one filled with resilience, compassion, and purpose. Stories saved me during my darkest hours, and I write in hopes they might do the same for others. If my work can inspire even one person to face their challenges with courage or see the world with a bit more clarity and hope, then that, to me, is the most meaningful legacy I could leave.
