BOM-Linked Visualization Eliminates Rework, Accelerates Decisions

One quiet but very significant change I am seeing in our industry is the use of real-time visualization linked to the bill of materials to remove uncertainty on the manufacturing floor before production starts. What has changed here is that design choices can now be evaluated within the overall manufacturing constraint environment, rather than in isolation. As each visual modification is made to the product design, all aspects, such as material availability, edge banding rules, and hinge compatibility, are simultaneously evaluated against those set forth in the production system. This eliminates the need for rework at the back end of production when the client approves a design based on visuals pre-validated by the production system as manufacturable. This method enables customers to make faster design decisions. Customers will no longer receive quotes or manually confirmed price estimates while they wait for confirmation of their ability to proceed with construction. 

The price and feasibility of building the customer’s requested products will automatically adjust with each design modification. From my point-of-view, this represents an extraordinary transformation. It effectively closes the gap between a product’s conceptualization and its manufacturability. Prior to this integration of tools, there was a great deal of negotiation required between designers and manufacturers to validate whether proposed designs could be manufactured. Now we can use a single-loop validation tool to continuously validate all components of a product design throughout the project timeline, thereby improving project accuracy, reducing friction, and establishing stable project schedules.
